How did you use Media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

RESEARCH

For our research into music videos, digi-packs and posters we mainly used the internet, although we did use magazines and actual CD’s to find out how we would begin creating our products. We mainly used YouTube and music channels to view and analyse different genres, styles and themes in music videos to view different portrayals and conventions of genres.
Once we had decided we would use the Rock genre, as we all enjoy listening to it, we then decided it would be useful if we analysed magazine photo shoots and posters to see different layouts, colours, styles, themes and poses we could draw inspiration from. To do this we mostly Googled images or used band websites to see how they had set up and posed in images and help us to create a view of what we wanted our posters and digi-packs to look like from this.

During our research stage we did use a lot of media technology to find an initial idea for our media product, however we did use real CD digi-packs and magazines to get a vague idea of what our product would be like.

PLANNING
When we started planning our media products by  deciding what genre of music and artist we wanted to use for the video, digi-pack and poster of our band and what their presentation would be like to the viewers. We decided on the genre of the product by each choosing two favourite bands/artists using our mobile phones, that we thought would be good to make a video of, and then realised they were mostly of the same Rock genre, and decided to go with that.

We then slimmed the choice down to You Me At Six, and decided we would go with a song that hadn’t been released yet as then we wouldn’t have any previous expectations of our product and could start fresh, and decided on the song The Dilemma after having checked there was no video on YouTube. As a group we decided it would be best for us to do this song/artist because we could create a simplistic but effective storyline and introduce band shots simultaneously.

Our planning for the digi-pack was largely based and influenced from our research of CD covers, album covers and digi-packs, to get a feel for what we were creating, the layout and the portrayal of the artist through the digi-pack. For the poster we analysed magazine covers, photosets/shoots to  have more insight into what our product could look like, and to create a realistic band layout portraying the artists from the video. To view, research, analyse and plan our products we used a wide range of the internet to go in-depth with our product and throughout kept all of our planning and research on Blogger, to keep it simple, organised and interesting to viewers/readers.

We also used computer software programmes such as Word and Publisher to create questionnaires to hand out to our focus group and get further insight, once they were created, we sent them out and had a general response back, but then narrowed it down to specific questions and used a camera to record our main focus group answering them to make it more interesting, entertaining and in-depth than just a general questionnaire.

CONSTRUCTION/MAKING
At the beginning of the construction stage of our products we used media technologies as we partly based our idea on the uploaded videos of the focus groups answers to the questionnaires, using it to have insight on colours, style and theme of videos they enjoyed watching in that genre, and develop into our work. This helped us decide it would be best to have a storyline and narrative together in the video as it widened our ideas and it helped to split it up and keep it interesting and appealing to the audience.

As a group, once we’d decided that we would have a storyline, we used influences from our research on music videos using the internet and YouTube and decided it would be more beneficial and make more sense for us to use the storyline described through the original song and lyrics, and decided we would take the theme of summer romance and create our own interpretations on that and develop them into our work. We started using media technologies at the very beginning stages of our work by documenting it all in Blogger to keep our work organised and simple to access easily, using the computer mainly to plan, research, evaluate, upload, edit and organise our stored work.

When we started our making of the product, we used media technologies a lot, such as using the video camera to shoot and film the video and focus group. We also used an SLR camera to take the photo shoot pictures for the band to put onto the digi-pack and posters, which we then editing using software such as GIMP and Serif Movie Plus to add effects and edit the pictures and video to enhance their quality for the products to make them stand out and become a little more eye-catching, appealing and stimulating to the audiences and viewers.

We also used the internet in the construction stages to get exact sizes and examples of digi-packs and posters for our products, but mostly based our work on our research and previous planning for our work.

EVALUATION
For the evaluation of our media products we used some media technologies including using the camera to take pictures and to record our group feedback, which we then edited using another media programme, Serif Movie Plus, in which we made our music video. We did this so that our feedback would be short and direct, instead of long and dragged out, so that we could easily tell straight away what they thought was good or could be improved.  Also because it gave us a chance to further our editing skills and adapt them to create a more sophisticated video for our blog.

We used blogger to present our evaluation because it’s a simple, easy and efficient way of storing and accessing our work which helped us to remain organised throughout our media product researching, planning/designing, and adaptation so we could store our ideas in one simple space.
